Ludum Dare 48

I have been a regular participant to the Ludum Dare game making competition, a triannual challenge that consists in creating a video game from scratch in 48 hours, over the course of a week-end. No previous code or assets are allowed. As it is a solo competition, it helps the contestants sharpen their skills in several fields, including game design, programming, visual arts and music.

When I first entered, less than 70 persons entered the contest. For the 21st edition, 599 games were submitted. Since even professional game developers participate as well, it is obviously difficult to get in the first places. I nonetheless managed to proudly get a 15th place with Arks of Mercy

Planar Love

Untangle the graph by dragging the nodes. Inspired by the online game Planarity and the many many clones you can find on the web.

  • Increasing difficulty, but maybe not.
  • Gets very annoying in higher levels.
  • Perfect when very bored at work.

Downloads

  • Planar Love LÖVE file for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. You need to get the LÖVE engine first, version 0.5. The .love file is really a renamed zip containing the source. Yeah sorry, I was lazy to package properly at the time...

Owliver, space tower janitor

Owliver screenshot

Equipped with his JanitPack 500 and his überRepair plutonium powered repair gun, Owliver's job is to fix whatever goes wrong in the tower.

  • Seven awesome hand drawn levels!
  • Unbearable repetitive music!
  • Made in 48 hours during the Ludum Dare #12 competition.

Revenge of the Orange

Revenge screenshot

In Chain Reaction, by BenW, an orange tile had to escape the terrifying advance of the musical tide of explosions.

Enough fleeing.

Time for revenge.

At each level, our hero tile has to take advantage of the chain reactions to blow all the targets at the same time. To achieve this, it received the gift of tile shifting: either the tiles around it, or full rows and columns. An invisible walker runs around the world, and makes the chain reactions start. Be sure to keep an eye on it.

Oh, also, be careful not to step in the void.

  • Mysterious atmosphere!
  • Mesmerizing visuals and sounds!
  • Very difficult to understand gameplay!
  • Made in 48 hours during the MiniLD 5 competition.

arcticum, seal protection

arcticum screenshot
The game where we learn that global warming is a seal conspiration.

You play the role of the protector of the seals. On the small island in the bottom right corner of the screen are happy and peaceful seals. Their greatest ennemy, the polar bears, are a constant threat. If the ice shelf ever reaches the island, the bears could cross over and feast on the poor seals.

Hopefuly, ice melts. So seals have fireballs.

Unfortunately, fireballs are a very temporary solution. This is why seals have devised the best weapon against ice: global warming. If they could collect four sources of global warming, they would permanently get rid of the polar bear scum.

  • Fireballs galore!
  • Destroyable environment!
  • Made in 48 hours during the Ludum Dare #14 competition.

Moleshroomciraptor

Moleshroomciraptor screenshot
The game with moles, mushrooms, and velociraptors.

You are a mole. You want to get all the happy happy mushrooms in each level and get back to the exit.

Beware of:

  • the nasty nasty raptors
  • the rolling rolling rocks

There are 20 levels. That's all.

  • Clone of classic arcade game Boulder Dash. Without the fun.
  • Random levels with game breaking bugs.
  • Bleepy chip tune.
  • Made in 48 hours during the Ludum Dare #15 competition.

WikNukem Forever

WikNukem Forever screenshot
Six degrees of separation. With a shotgun.

Duke is dropped in a random Wikipedia page and has to get in as few links as possible to the article on Duke Nukem Forever. But the evil googlebots have invaded the pages, so it won't be an easy journey...

Each level is made of platforms and ladders, and has one exit for each link found on the Wikipedia article. It also has the "Exit" exit, which brings you back to the previous level, if you need to backtrack.

  • ASCII art extraordinaire!
  • Procedurally generated levels, retrieved in real time from Wikipedia!
  • Made in 48 hours during the Mini Ludum Dare #12 competition.

Striking Mess on the Stage

SMotS screenshot
(Because Of The Jealousy Of A Cute Divine Girl)

A divine love story opposes the muses of Comedy and Tragedy in a terrible struggle for the love of Dyonisos. Out of jealousy, they try to destruct the art of each other: while a tragedy is being played somewhere on the world, Thalia messes up the mind of the actors and makes them play a comedy! So does Melpomene in comedies, of course.

You'll be randomly Thalia or Melpomene, and you must turn all the actors from your rival into actors of your Art.

However, there are not only actors on stage: there is scenery, too! You'll win when all the props on the stage are in your color. You can't interact with props. Only actors can.

Oh, and there is the other Muse on the stage, too. Otherwise it would be much more boring, you see. She can do the same things as you: turn your actors to her side.

  • Frantic arcade action!
  • Three levels of difficulty!
  • Awesome art by Tût-tûûût!
  • More than 10 minutes of music!
  • Made in 48 hours by team of two during the Mini Ludum Dare #14 competition.

Rise of the Taka-Pum

Taka-Pum screenshot
Lead your army of Taka-Pum to victory using the Heavenly Drums of Awesome!

Rise of the Taka-Pum is a rhythm game in which you use drum patterns to give orders to your units. Its name, its look and its concept obviously take inspiration from Patapon, the great PSP game I actually have never played.

  • Complete and fairly long in-game tutorial. With funny back-story. Sort of.
  • 15 drum patterns, from basic commands to mystical miracles!
  • Apparently very difficult to play with no musical ear...
  • No single player mode.
  • Made in 48 hours during the Mini Ludum Dare #16 competition.
